Paraguay Decides Not To Move May 15 Public Holiday

The Paraguayan Minister of Tourism, Sofía Afara, has announced that the government had decided not to follow the recent recommendation by the National Secretariat of Tourism (Senatur), to move the upcoming May 15 public holiday to Monday, May 16, 2022, due to both the May 14 and 15 annual public holiday falling on a weekend in 2022.

Today's decision follows last month's announcement by minister Montiel that the government was analyzing the possibility of moving the upcoming May 15 Independence Day and Mother's Day public holiday from Sunday, May 15, 2022, to Monday, May 16, 2022 (2022-04-29).

Last year, under partially similar circumstances, the Paraguayan government had announced that the May 14-15 Independence Day public holidays would be observed on Friday and Saturday, May 14-15, 2021, and that neither public holiday would be moved due to the coinciding weekend (2021-05-06), while 4 years ago (2018-05-01), the Paraguayan head of presidential decrees, Édgar Rodas, released a communique confirming that May 14 was a permanent part of the list of dates of the Paraguayan public holidays, as per law 4.531.

Despite law 4.531 being clear on the matter of the annual May 14 and 15 public holidays ("son inamovibles, por una cuestión legislativa"), there remains the need for a government clarification, almost every year (2019-04-23, 2018-05-01, 2016-04-09, 2014-04-29, 2013-04-08, 2012-04-12, 2011-11-30, 2011-05-10, 2011-03-11, 2011-01-29, 2011-01-12, 2010-05-13).
